Quidtrail is an independent guide to Making Tax Digital for Income Tax for UK landlords and sole traders. We are not HMRC and not affiliated with GOV.UK.

What this site does

We explain the MTD for Income Tax rules in plain English and offer free tools: an MTD checker, a deadline calendar and an A to Z of the software HMRC lists. We also set out what software providers publish about their products, side by side, starting with MTD software for landlords.

Where our information comes from

  • GOV.UK first. Rules, thresholds, exemptions and deadlines come from GOV.UK guidance and HMRC's own tools and manuals. Each page links to the sources it relies on and shows the date we last checked them.
  • Vendor facts from vendors' own pages. Prices, plans, limits and features come from each provider's own website, with a link to the page and the date we checked it. Prices change often, so always confirm on the provider's site before you buy.
  • HMRC's software list as published. Our software A to Z copies what HMRC's software finder showed on the date stated, in alphabetical order.

What we don't do

  • No ratings or rankings. We don't publish star ratings, scores, "best" lists or verdicts. Lists are alphabetical or in no particular order.
  • No hands-on testing yet. We haven't used or tested any of the products we mention. Everything we say about a product is what its provider publishes, and we say so on the page.
  • No tax advice. Our pages are general guidance. Check your own situation with HMRC or a qualified accountant.

Corrections and updates

We re-check pages against their sources, and pages with prices or product lists are re-checked monthly. When a source changes or we find a mistake, we correct the page and update its "last checked" date. Where GOV.UK pages disagree with each other, we say so rather than pick one.

How the site will be funded

We plan to fund the site through affiliate links: if you sign up for a product through one, the provider may pay us a commission at no extra cost to you. No affiliate links are live at the moment, so no link on this site currently earns us money. When they are, each one will have an Ad label right next to it and the page will show a disclosure at the top. Commission won't decide what we include or how we describe it.
